Who is Pandora? (Part 1)

January 18, 2011

Perhaps you have seen the swan in our recently featured cartoons. It’s time for us to share some of her story because she will be making regular appearances at Failing Schools. Pandora the swan is a conscientious teacher at Cranford Beaksley Elementary.   This urban school is under the supervision of a certain Gander Honklin.    Beaksley is a school with (gasp!) low scores on standardized tests and this fact seems to have become its defining trait, despite all of its other qualities. Pandora is therefore often frustrated by an ongoing struggle to find balance between the many superficial demands of her job and the greater, more important, needs of her students.
In her work she often encounters other birds who do not truly have small birds’ best interests at heart. Thus, this intelligent and insightful bird frequently finds reason to verge into cynicism.   Like other (misleadingly-named) Mute Swans, she may hiss or snort when annoyed or even launch into shrill aggressive trumpeting. However, at her core she is an optimistic, hopeful idealist and she always finds a way to dust her feathers off, smooth them back into place, and regain her composure.  Perhaps you will recognize a little of Pandora in yourself, or someone you know.  We are interested in hearing any of your Pandora-like scenarios.  Maybe we’ll even present one : )

I like the idea of reader submitted Pandora stories.

Who’s ready for a RTTT Pandora competition in which whoever lowers their standards and deprofessionalizes teaching the most in their suggested cartoon gets a candy prize and bunch of unfunded mandates?

But seriously, good work and let’s keep this idea going.

You practically read my mind, Mark. Except, I didn’t think of the candy. Nice touch!

We could create SFA–Swans for America. We could import some swans who are at the top of the charts for beauty, but have no experience in flying or gliding on ponds and get them to show the cygnets how its done.
