Rachel Maddow & Lansing, MI mayor on threats to schools, democracy

April 29, 2011
by

Last night, Rachel Maddow covered the “Emergency Manager” situation in Michigan. Unilateral power is being given to a single individual, who can override democratically-elected officials while being simultaneously paid by the state AND by private companies and individuals. Money is being taken from the schools– whose budget was in the black– and given away to the wealthy in tax cuts. Some districts (largely poor and minority) are now being targeted for control by “Emergency Managers;” in an all-too-familiar tone, these communities are being told that respectful, democratic treatment isn’t their right, but a luxury they can’t afford.

This is truly scary stuff.

Excellent video – I posted it on facebook. I wish we had a mayor like him somewhere in the state of California. We’re being overrun with charter take-overs and give-aways in Los Angeles.

Also on Maddow was a story of students of Detroit Catherine Ferguson Academy a school for young girls who are or were pergnant to finish their high school education. That school is up on the list to close and The young girls of the school did not want them to close it. So the students there did something and they occupied the school during the spring break. The students would have still been in the school still until this if only hadn’t they been arrested and ticketed. how can this possibly be legal? are there going to be challenges in court?? Is this how it works now-you can make any law you want as long as you’re a Republican?
